Contract
farming can be defined as agricultural production carried out according to an
agreement between a buyer and a farmer. Contract Farming has the potential of addressing
most of the urgent and critical needs of the Indian agriculture sector. It is
the only way to make small and marginal farmers competitive by enabling them to
access technology, credit and marketing. The concept of contract farming
entered the Indian agriculture in the early 2000s. To overcome the limitations on
contract farming, the Government should play the role of a facilitator and not
that of a regulator in developing and promoting a healthy system of
farmer-corporate relationship for mutual benefit. This will help in development
of agriculture sector in India. Legal protection to
contract growers as a group must be considered to protect them from ill-effects
of contracting.
