Translation (English-Hindi) Exercise – 70

We all want to succeed in life because success brings us wealth, power and fame in the world. Successful people are widely respected and are honoured by people for their achievements. It is, therefore, no wonder that a large number of people aspire to achieve success in their lives. For example, almost five lakh brilliant young people seek to become India's top civil servants by writing the Civil Services Examination in India. The civil services in India provide people with the best way to serve the country and give them power, perks, and prestige. However, it is also a fact that less than a thousand candidates eventually succeed in their endeavour and more than 99% of the candidates fail to realize their dream. We achieve success in this competitive world only if we perform better than others in our chosen field in life. To perform better, we must have superior knowledge, skill and abilities. Unfortunately, most of us want success but are not willing to work hard to improve ourselves to become truly worthy of success. We often don't recognize our weaknesses and, hence, continue to commit the same mistakes repeatedly. It is, thus, not surprising that most people fail to achieve the desired success in their lives. We can't achieve success in life unless we become worthy of it. However, we cannot improve ourselves unless we identify our weaknesses and overcome them. Unfortunately, most people prefer to see good things in themselves and bad things in others. When we see only goodness within, we feel happy and satisfied. It feels even better when we see evil within others because we immediately get a false sense of superiority. Thus, such an attitude in life makes us complacent and provides us instant gratification by doing nothing. People don't want to accept their mistakes to avoid working hard and Improving upon them. They avoid looking for goodness in others which will force them to improve themselves.  (No. of words 324)

Translation (English-Hindi) Exercise – 68

On his second trip to India from South Africa in 1901, Gandhi attended the Congress session in Calcutta. The sanitary condition of the Congress camp was horrible. Some delegates used the verandah as latrines, and others did not object to it. Gandhi reacted immediately. When he spoke to the volunteers, they said, "This is not our job. This is a sweeper's job. Gandhi then asked for a broom and started cleaning the filth himself. The volunteers were astonished, but none came forward to assist him Years later, when Gandhi became the guiding star of the Indian National Congress; volunteers formed a bhangi (sweeper) squad in the Congress camps where, once, even the Brahmins worked as bhangis. This is one of the many examples where Gandhi took the lead in doing what he asked others to do. He always believed in transforming himself first before asking others to change themselves. It is not thus surprising that Mahatma Gandhi is one of the world's most outstanding leaders and given the honour of the Father of the Nation by Indians. People of India trusted him since they knew that he was true to his words. American writer John C. Maxwell says, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." We all want to change the world since no society is perfect. We all have many ideas on how we can create a good society only if people change. We all are good at advising others but rarely implement the change in ourselves. Indian poet and the writer of 'Ramcharitmanas' Tulsidas said very wisely, 'Par Updesh Kushal Bahutere' (Most people are experts in advising others). People want others to change but do not change themselves when it does not benefit them. We have many problems in our society, and we want it to change for the better. But we as individuals need to change first. (No. of words 318)

Translation (English-Hindi) Exercise – 66

The progress of a society depends on the harmonious living of the members of the society. When people follow moral principles, they care for one another and create a loving, peaceful and progressive society. These moral principles clearly distinguish right and wrong, proper and improper, or good and bad behaviour. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Morality is the basis of things, and the truth is the substance of all morality". No society can stand together without morality, and no morality can stand for long unless it stands on truth. Morality represents a body of standards or principles derived from a code of conduct prescribed by a particular philosophy, religion, or culture. It also means a standard that a person believes should be universal. However, morality is not static but evolves with time and place. Some people find it difficult to change with time, and they stick to the old standards of morality imbibed by them from their ancestors. Such moral values can be called customary morality, which comes from the old customs, traditions, and religion of the society, state or nation. Customary morality flows from ancient culture and traditions. For example, ancient Indians followed the professions based on their caste and married within their castes. Women's roles were limited to taking care of the family and being a homemaker. They were often confined to their homes and covered their faces whenever they had to go out. Such traditions may appear to be oppressive to modern women. The American author Letty Cottin Pogrebin wisely depictured this condition of women in a traditional society, "When men are oppressed, it's a tragedy. When women are oppressed, it's tradition." Marriage is considered sacred and irrevocable in traditional Hindu Society, while divorce finds no mention in any scripture. (No. of words 292)

Translation (English-Hindi) Exercise – 64

How do you feel when you go to your office and find the traffic halted because some VIP or minister passes through the same road? How do you feel when you visit your senior civil servant cousin and find him living in a big bungalow with beaconed cars and a posse of orderlies? What do you think when you see a senior police officer escorted by a host of police officers when travelling on the road; or prominent business people living in their palatial bungalows with personal jets, fleets of cars and dozens of servants? We often get impressed with the privileges enjoyed by ministers, civil servants and top honchos of firms. Naturally, we wish to occupy those positions and want those privileges. However, have we ever realized that such great benefits are associated with enormous responsibilities that have to be carried out by the so-called 'privileged classes'? It is essential to understand that there is no such thing as a free lunch in the world. You have to pay the price for everything that you get in this world. When you get a privilege, it always comes with responsibility which comes with the position. Mwai Kibaki, the former president of Kenya, rightly explained, "Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." However, most people focus only on enjoyable positions and privileges and shun the responsibilities that come with such power and position. Privilege means a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. We get many privileges due to our birth itself. For example, when we are born into a family of rich, intelligent, and caring parents, we are already privileged as we do not have to face the hardship of millions of children worldwide. Translation (Hindi-English) Exercise – 63

Translation (English-Hindi) Exercise – 62

The American philosopher and author Ralph Waldo Emerson ones said, The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." While we appreciate such words of wisdom, weedy understand the true meaning of such words since we rarely try to follow them in our lives. How many of us ever try to find purpose in our life? How many of us ever try to be helpful to the world and work hard to make the world better? How many of us would be willing to suffer for the millions of people in our world and lead a life with a purpose? Most of us prefer to live a good life ourselves, ignoring our duties and responsibilities for the world. A good life for us means a life of comfort and luxury with few problems or worries. It means having lots of money, a big house, expensive cars and modern gadgets. To achieve such a life, we work hard and even sacrifice our ideals, principles and relationships. Unfortunately, most people remain unhappy because they never achieve the desired success. A few lucky ones who become successful also fail to live well due to failing health, broken relationships, and an often guilty conscience. What is then the secret to a good life? "The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination," said American psychologist Carl Rogers. If we wish to be happy, we must move in the right direction and follow the correct principles. We have to earn a good life by first making the world suitable. It means that we must try to make a difference in the world by contributing to the betterment of society using all our abilities. (No. of words 312)

Translation (English-Hindi) Exercise – 61

When Alexander invaded India in 326 BC, he crossed the Indus river and defeated the Indian rulers in battle. Noteworthy of the Indians’ attempts at war, was the use of elephants, something that the Macedonians had never seen before. Alexander then took over the lands of the defeated kings.

The Gupta period has been referred to as the Golden Age of Indian history. When Chandragupt I received the gift of Pataliputra in dowry when he married the daughter of the chief of the ‘Licchavis’, he started to lay down the foundation of his empire, which extended from the river Ganges or the Ganga to the city of Allahabad. He ruled for 15 years and was also referred to as the ‘king of kings’ for his strategic conquests and the flourishing state of India.

The last of the ancient kingdoms in India was by the king Harshavardhana, who ascended the throne at Thanneshwar and Kannauj after his brother died. While successful in a few of his conquests, he eventually got defeated by the Chalukya Kingdom of Deccan India. Harshavardhana was well-known for establishing relations with the Chinese, and also for having high religious tolerance and strong administrative capabilities.

The Cholas were the most important rulers at this time, the 9th Century AD. Their kingdom covered a large part of South India, including Sri Lanka and the Maldives. While the rulers ruled bravely and carried out the annexation of multiple territories in India, the empire came to an end in the 14th Century AD with an invasion by a man named Kafur Malik. The monuments from the Chola Dynasty are still intact and are known for their rustic charm.

The next major empire was that of the Mughals, preceded by a rise in Islamic rulers. The invasion of Timur was a significant point in Indian history before a Hindu revival movement called the Bhakti movement, came to be. Finally, in the 16th Century, the Mughal empire started to rise. One of the greatest empires of India, the Mughal empire was a rich and glorious one, with the whole of India united and ruled by one monarch. The Mughal Kings were Babar, Humayun, Sher Shah Suri (not a Mughal king), Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb. They were responsible for setting up efficient public administration, laying out infrastructure, and promoting the arts. A large number of monuments in India today exist from the Mughal period. The death of the last Mughal King, Aurangzeb, sowed the seeds of disintegration within India. Influencers of Islamic architecture in India, the Mughal kings are still looked back in awe.

Emperor Akbar, also known as Akbar the Great or Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, was the third emperor of the Mughal Empire, after Babur and Humayun. He was the son of Nasiruddin Humayun and succeeded him as the emperor in the year 1556 when he was only 13 years old.

Shah Jahan, also known as Shahbuddin Mohammed Shah Jahan, was a Mughal Emperor who ruled in the Indian Subcontinent from 1628 to 1658. He was the fifth Mughal ruler, after Babur, Humayun, Akbar, and Jahangir. Shah Jahan succeeded the throne after revolting against his father, Jahangir.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India. He is considered to be one of the greatest warriors of his time and even today, stories of his exploits are narrated as a part of the folklore. King Shivaji used the guerrilla tactics to capture a part of, the then, dominant Mughal empire.

During the late 16th and the 17th Centuries, the European trading companies in India competed with each other ferociously. By the last quarter of the 18th Century, the English had outdone all others and established themselves as the dominant power in India. The British administered India for a period of about two centuries and brought about revolutionary changes in the social, political and economic life of the country.

However, the zenith of colonisation was achieved when the British arrived in the early 1600s as traders. Capitalizing on the disintegration that existed in India after the Mughal rule, the British actively used the strategy of ‘divide-and-rule’ to rule over India for over 2 centuries. While the British had come in earlier, they only achieved political power in 1757 AD after the Battle of Plassey.

They took a keen interest in the resources that India had to offered and have been looked back at as plunderers of India’s wealth of resources - as they took cotton, spices, silk, and tea, amongst numerous other resources. While they did lay out a massive chunk of India’s infrastructure, by also bringing the Indians steam engines, it is seldom looked back at as an equal relationship. The British Raj was divisive and pit Indians against one another, on the basis of religion; and also mistreated the laborers. The Indians were essentially slaves of the British rule and were working hard without any returns on their work. This, naturally, led to multiple mutinies; and prominent freedom fighters came to the forefront. Different ideologies of thought believed that there were different ways of gaining freedom; however, they all had one common goal - freedom.

The British queen had asserted that the aim of the British was to help India progress - however, multiple problems arose without the consultation of Indian leaders. One important instance of this was when in the First World War, Britain launched an attack on Germany on behalf of India, even though India did not wish for that to happen; and millions of Indian soldiers were at the forefront of the British Indian Army during both the world wars - further fuelling the Indian resistance. Over a million Indian soldiers were killed in both the World Wars.
